KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says he is unaware of any invitation extended to former party deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali to rejoin PKR.
The PKR president, who is also Prime Minister, said he had not been informed of any such offer to Azmin, who is now Bersatu secretary-general.
“Was there an invitation? I wasn’t informed,” he told reporters after attending the National Innovation and Commercialisation Expo (NICE) 2026 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre here on Thursday (Aug 27).
He was responding to a question on Azmin’s reported rejection of an invitation to return to PKR.
When reminded that he had recently called on party veterans to return to PKR, Anwar jokingly replied: “Oh, that’s for the otai... are you an otai?”
At the PKR annual congress in Melaka on Aug 15, Anwar had apologised to former party leaders and activists who may have felt sidelined and urged them to return to the party’s fold.
“If we have made any mistakes, I apologise. Come back to the path of our struggle,” he had said in his policy speech.
Former Bandar Tun Razak MP Datuk Kamarudin Jaffar and former Nibong Tebal MP Datuk Dr Mansor Othman have reportedly been considering a return to PKR.
Azmin, Kamarudin and Mansor were among 11 PKR MPs who left the party in February 2020 during the political crisis that led to the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government.
Azmin was sacked from PKR on Feb 24, 2020, with the party at the time accusing him of “open betrayal”.
He subsequently joined Bersatu and is currently the Hulu Kelang assemblyman.
Azmin has said he has no intention of returning to PKR, expressing confidence that Bersatu remains the platform for his political struggle despite the challenges facing the party.
