Close watch on tourism backbones

Down to business: Fahmi speaking during the weekly Cabinet press conference in Putrajaya -Bernama

PUTRAJAYA: A comprehensive evaluation of the aviation and hospitality sectors will be carried out to ensure the success of the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign, which has now been formally extended through to the end of 2027, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

The Communications Minister said the Cabinet was briefed on the extension, originally proposed by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Fahmi highlighted that the Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister has identified a pressing need to safeguard the country’s tourism pillars from the dual pressures of the global energy crisis and ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

“The Cabinet was informed today of the announcement made by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi regarding the extension of Visit Malaysia 2026 until the end of 2027.

“The Tourism Minister has also advised the Cabinet that there is a necessity to scrutinise both the aviation and hospitality sectors,” he said during a press conference here yesterday.

He said the government’s intervention aims to prevent these critical industries from becoming overburdened by rising operational costs and shifting travel patterns.

“This scrutiny is vital to ensure these sectors are not too heavily impacted by the global energy crisis and the conflict in West Asia,” he added.
