PETALING JAYA: Malaysia-China Business Council (MCBC) chairman Senator Tan Sri Low Kian Chuan met with Communist Party of China (CPC) Xinjiang Secretary Chen Xiaojiang last week during a working visit to Urumqi, Xinjiang, to advance trade cooperation between Malaysia and the region.
The courtesy call represented the centre- piece of the council’s visit to Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on June 25 and 26, 2026, to attend the 9th China-Eurasia Expo, the MCBC said in a statement.
“The meeting reflected the cordial and growing relationship between the two sides and laid a constructive foundation for future collaboration,” it added.
During the call, Low highlighted Xinjiang’s pivotal role in the Silk Road Economic Belt and as China’s gateway to Central Asia, the Middle East and Europe, and expressed the MCBC’s readiness to help bridge Malaysian and Chinese enterprises across trade, investment, logistics and connectivity, agriculture and the halal industry, the green economy, tourism and people-to-people exchange.
He further conveyed the council’s commitment to strengthening practical cooperation between Malaysia and Xinjiang, and its role in translating the strong bilateral ties between Malaysia and China into concrete business outcomes.
According to the MCBC, the participation of its delegation at the 9th China-Eurasia Expo, serves to reinforce Malaysia’s active engagement in the platform as a gateway connecting Asia and Europe.
Held at the Xinjiang International Convention and Exhibition Centre under the theme, “New Opportunities of the Silk Road, New Vitality for Eurasia”, the international event drew participants from 49 countries, regions, and international organisations, as well as over 3,000 enterprises.
In his speech at the “Invest in Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (XPCC)” event, Low emphasised the complementarities between the Malaysian and Xinjiang economies, such as agriculture and agri-processing, the halal industry, logistics and infrastructure, and green development.
He went on to call for greater two-way investment and partnership between Malaysian enterprises and XPCC, and reaffirmed the MCBC’s readiness to facilitate matchmaking, market access and sustained engagement to translate the opportunities presented into tangible cooperation.
The MCBC’s delegation also paid a visit to the Malaysia Pavilion at the expo, where Malaysian products and capabilities were showcased to Eurasian buyers and investors.
Meanwhile, the chairman further encouraged the council’s exhibitors and lent the council’s support towards efforts to raise the profile of Malaysian enterprises in Xinjiang and across the wider Central Asian region.
“The visit forms part of the MCBC’s sustained programme of high-level engagement with Chinese provinces and regions, reinforcing the council’s mandate to promote bilateral trade, investment and economic cooperation between Malaysia and China in support of mutual prosperity,” the MCBC said.
