Govt to evaluate aviation, hospitality sectors as Visit Malaysia Year extends to 2027

PUTRAJAYA: A comprehensive evaluation of the aviation and hospitality sectors will be carried out to ensure the success of the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 campaign, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

The Communications Minister said the Cabinet was briefed on the formal extension of the campaign to 2027, originally proposed by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Fahmi highlighted that the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture has identified a pressing need to safeguard the country’s tourism pillars from the dual pressures of the global energy crisis and ongoing geopolitical tensions in Western Asia.

"The Cabinet was informed on Wednesday (April 8) of the announcement made by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi regarding the extension of Visit Malaysia Year 2026 until the end of 2027.

"The Tourism Minister has also advised the Cabinet that there is a necessity to scrutinise both the aviation and hospitality sectors,” he said during a press conference here on Wednesday.

He said the government's intervention aims to prevent these critical industries from becoming overburdened by rising operational costs and shifting travel patterns.

"This scrutiny is vital to ensure these sectors are not too heavily impacted by the global energy crisis and the conflict in Western Asia," he explained.
