Media must be allowed to perform duties unhindered, says Fahmi

PUTRAJAYA: Journalists must be given full freedom to carry out their professional duties if they identify themselves as members of the press, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

The Communications Minister expressed regret over an incident where several reporters claimed they were harassed by police, reiterating the government's stance on media freedom.

"I am disappointed by what occurred. Our media colleagues must be given full space to perform their duties.

"On principle, journalists should be allowed to operate without hindrance, provided they introduce themselves as working professionals," he said during a press conference here on Wednesday (April 8).

He was responding to claims that police ordered several journalists to delete all photos and videos taken at the scene of a gang-related attack at a karaoke centre in Cheras on Tuesday (April 7).

Fahmi said he had yet to receive full details but would liaise with the police to seek further clarification.
