Azam Baki commended for composure, professionalism despite forum disruption

KUALA LUMPUR: Bentong MP Young Syefura Othman has commended Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki for his professionalism in handling a brief disruption during a public forum at the World Trade Centre here.

Young Syefura, who is also a member of the Special Committee on Corruption (JKMR), said she was taken aback by the incident, which occurred while Azam was delivering his opening address at the Wacana Ilmiah Perdana on Tuesday (April 7).

“This is a democracy and people have the right to protest, but I’m not sure if it was appropriate in that setting.

“Dissatisfaction can be expressed, but what matters most is the attitude of the chief commissioner himself and how professionally he managed the situation,” she told reporters after the event, where she was one of the panelists.

She added that it was the first time she had witnessed such an incident despite attending numerous forums.

The disruption occurred as Azam was delivering his speech at the forum.

Young Syefura said public figures must always be prepared for unexpected situations.

“I believe he (Azam) is always ready for all possibilities. This could happen not only to him but even to our Prime Minister or to myself.

“This is something we have to be prepared for, and what is important is how we manage and overcome such situations,” she said.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Corruption Watch (MCW) president Jais Abdul Karim praised Azam for remaining calm and composed throughout the incident.

“He remained focused, was not provoked and continued his speech with authority until the end, which was met with thunderous applause from the audience,” he said.

Jais added that MCW fully supports Azam’s leadership and steadfastness in carrying out his duty to combat corruption despite facing challenges and public pressure.

“In a democratic country, the space to voice opinions is recognised, but it must be done in an orderly and ethical manner without disrupting an academic forum.

“We advise any party with grievances to remain patient and allow the ongoing investigations to proceed towards a resolution expected in the near future.

“All allegations or perceptions should be addressed through proper channels and based on facts,” he said.
