JPJ shifts enforcement focus from fines to road safety compliance

PUTRAJAYA: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) will no longer set key performance indicators (KPIs) for the number of summonses issued by its enforcement officers.

Director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the department would shift its focus from the number of fines issued to improving compliance and road safety.

He said enforcement operations would instead prioritise patrols, monitoring and preventive action to reduce road accident risks.

"Our focus is not on issuing summonses but on ensuring compliance and reducing the risk of road accidents.

"The enforcement division will review the summons KPI that was previously set," he said during the JPJ monthly gathering on Friday (April 3).

Aedy Fadly said the move follows the Transport Ministry’s policy direction to strengthen enforcement strategies that deliver greater impact on road safety.

He added that enforcement officers would instead be assessed based on the effectiveness of operations and safety outcomes, rather than the number of summonses issued.
