Raids in Semporna uncover wildlife, immigration, business offences

KOTA KINABALU: Wildlife, business, employment and customs offences were recorded during an integrated operation in Semporna district that began on Wednesday (April 1).

The Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom), which led the raid, reported compounds and seizures worth more than RM680,250, with 165 notices issued.

“We also focused on immigration, business, employment, customs and protected wildlife-related offences,” said Esscom commander Datuk Victor Sanjos in a statement.

A total of 40 resorts and business premises in town, on the water, in squatter areas and in villages were inspected.

Immigration checks led to the arrest of 28 undocumented migrants. Sanjos said 269 personnel from the police, armed forces and maritime agencies took part in the operation.

For employment offences, 32 compounds for various breaches were issued under the Employment Act 1955. The Semporna District Council issued 33 compounds against businesses operating without licences and for breaching licence conditions.

The Companies Commission of Malaysia issued nine compounds, while the Personal Data Protection Department issued eight notices and compounds.

The Fire and Rescue Department issued 49 notices over failures to comply with fire safety requirements. The Customs Department confiscated unlicensed alcohol worth RM11,642, including tax.

In wildlife-related action, officers seized wild boar meat, turtles and magpie-robin birds worth about RM1,300 that were in possession without permits.

Offences were also recorded by the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry and Perkeso.

Sanjos said Esscom will continue to conduct raids and patrols to curb crime and called on the public to cooperate with authorities.
