MIC to hold nationwide meetings before deciding on Perikatan tie-up

KUALA LUMPUR: MIC will hold a series of meetings over the next two to three months with its branches and members before making any decision on whether to join Perikatan Nasional, says its president Tan Sri SA Vigneswaran (pic).

He said this was to ensure that the grassroots still supported joining Perikatan Nasional, especially since PAS has taken over the coalition’s leadership.

“It’s not that we agree or disagree with PAS’ leadership, but the decision (to join Perikatan Nasional) was made last year,” he told the media when met after the Commonwealth Legal Education Association Conference 2026 at Universiti Malaya on Thursday (April 2).

He stressed that MIC’s move to reconsider leaving Barisan Nasional and joining Perikatan Nasional had nothing to do with PAS’ ideologies.

“Therefore, we in the Supreme Council are of the opinion that the matter must be brought back to the state branches before a decision is made,” he added.

Talk has been circulating since last year that MIC was considering leaving Barisan Nasional to join Perikatan Nasional.

On March 25, MIC deputy president Datuk Seri M. Saravanan said the party would not rush into any political realignment before taking into account the views of the Indian community, particularly given the coalition’s current leadership.

He added that, for now, MIC remains with Barisan and that no final decision has been made.

However, on March 28, Perikatan secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said Perikatan would regard MIC as having rejected its offer to join the coalition if no official response is received soon.
