Azam Baki tight-lipped on speculation over non-renewal of MACC contract

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki has declined to comment on claims that his service contract will not be renewed.

He was speaking to reporters after attending the Multi-Agency Task Force (MATF): Way Forward engagement session at the MACC headquarters here on Thursday (April 2).

“No comment. I have already said that I will not respond to that issue,” he said briefly.

Earlier, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was reported as saying that no decision has been made on Azam’s contract, which is set to expire on May 12.

Previously, a Singapore-based news agency reported that Azam’s contract would not be extended, citing unnamed high-level sources.

The report also claimed that the government is facing mounting pressure over investigations into Azam’s shareholdings, and that his tenure as MACC chief would not be continued.

International media outlet Bloomberg had earlier reported that Azam held millions of shares in a financial services company, based on corporate filings.

However, Azam has maintained that his shareholding, valued at RM800,000 in a financial services firm, was acquired transparently and in accordance with procedures.
