Car makers staying put – for now

PETALING JAYA: Industry players are staying put while they assess the implications of the government’s new electric vehicle (EV) conditions.

A Chinese automotive brand representative said the company is still reviewing the policy framework before making any firm decisions.

“There are currently no plans to exit the Malaysian market. We are still reviewing all possibilities and monitoring market sentiments.”

Similarly, a European automotive brand dismissed speculation of a potential withdrawal, reaffirming its continued presence.

Malaysia Electric Vehicle Owners Club president Datuk Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi said EV users are hoping for a more competitive landscape, while acknowledging the government’s broader policy goals.

“From a drivers’ perspective, we would like to have a more competitive market but we also understand the strategic aim of developing our automotive industry,” he said, suggesting a timeline be imposed on some of the policy measures.

“Perhaps the floor price can be in place until 2030 so that our local players are under some pressure to improve their competitiveness,” he said.
