Police launch probe after baby boy’s remains found

KUALA PILAH: The grim discovery of a newborn baby boy’s remains near a transmission tower in Rembang Panas near here has caused police to launch an investigation.

District deputy OCPD DSP Shamrol Shah Ramli said the discovery was made by a member of the public, who then alerted the police around 6.30pm on Thursday.

He said a team of investigators, including from the state forensics unit, was immediately dispatched to the scene.

It is believed the infant had been dead for at least two days.

“Preliminary examinations found the body to be that of a fully formed newborn baby boy with the umbilical cord still attached,” he said in a statement.

He said there were no signs of external injury on the victim’s remains which had already begun to decompose.

The case is being investigated under section 318 of the Penal Code which states that anyone who intentionally conceals or attempts to conceal the birth of a child by secretly burying or disposing of the dead body of that child commits an offence.

Offenders can be jailed for up to two years or fined or both upon conviction.

DSP Shamrol Shah said the remains were sent to Hospital Tuanku Ampuan Najihah for post-mortem.

He said those with information on the matter can contact investigating officer Insp Supiah Ishak at 019-993 3978 or the district station at 06-484 2999 to assist in investigations.
