MEF calls for proactive fuel conservation, sustainable energy usage amid current uncertainties

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) says all segments of society should play an active and responsible role in conserving fuel and using energy sustainably amid ongoing uncertainties in the Middle East.

Its president, Datuk Dr Syed Hussain Syed Husman (pic), said current geopolitical tensions have increased volatility in global energy markets and Malaysia will be affected by these external pressures.

"MEF supports the government's fuel rationalisation efforts and calls on all stakeholders to act decisively and responsibly in managing fuel consumption," he said in a statement on Friday (March 27).

He said fuel rationalisation is a shared national responsibility, not the government's burden alone.

"It requires a whole-of-nation approach, where policymakers provide clear direction and support, businesses improve efficiency and innovation, and the rakyat adopt more responsible consumption habits," he said.

Syed Hussain said MEF will work with the government to ensure fuel rationalisation measures are implemented in a way that balances economic sustainability, business continuity and national resilience.

He also urged businesses to accelerate their transition to sustainable practices and alternative energy sources.

"Employers should start investing in renewable energy, including solar, and consider the gradual adoption of electric vehicles where feasible.

"Creating internal task forces to identify fuel-saving strategies across operations will also be important," he said.

In a special address yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that, effective April 1, the individual monthly limit for the purchase of Budi95 will be temporarily reduced from 300 litres to 200 litres due to the conflict in the Middle East. – Bernama
