Two nabbed over Johor Baru food truck, fireworks stall fire

JOHOR BARU: Two people have been arrested in connection with a fire involving a food truck and a fireworks stall here.

Johor deputy police chief Deputy Comm Hoo Chuan Huat said the suspects, aged 30 and 35, were arrested separately between 11.15am and 12.30pm on Wednesday (March 25).

"The first suspect was arrested in Kulai, and his arrest led to the second suspect, who was arrested in Kampung Melayu Majidee.

"Both suspects are locals, and one of them has a licence to sell fireworks," he said at a press conference during the state-level Police Day celebration at the Johor police headquarters here on Wednesday.

He noted that no injuries were reported from the fire, which broke out at around 8.50pm on Monday (March 23) in the Majidee area here.

"The fire was believed to have come from the generator used by the suspect for the fireworks stall.

"It then spread to the food truck and the stall itself," he said, adding that losses were estimated at around RM50,000.

The case is being investigated under Section 286 of the Penal Code for negligence involving explosive substances, he added.

Meanwhile, on another matter, DCP Hoo said a total of 66 cases involving fireworks have been reported since the start of Ramadan.
