Five Thai crew injured in cargo vessel fire off Tanjung Sedili


KOTA TINGGI: Five Thai male crew members suffered burn injuries, some of which were categorised as serious, after a fire broke out on board a cargo vessel.

Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Tanjung Sedili Maritime Zone acting director, Maritime Commander Mohd Najib Sam said the incident took place at 10.20am on Tuesday (March 24).

“The fire began in the vessel’s galley, but the crew managed to bring it under control before help arrived,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (March 25).

Maritime Commander Mohd Najib said the Johor Baru Maritime Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC) received a distress signal at 12.20pm.

He added that the Tanjung Sedili Maritime Zone immediately deployed its Perkasa boat to the site, about 30 nautical miles (55.56km) east of Tanjung Sedili, to rescue the victims.

“The victims, aged 21 to 61, were transported to shore and handed over to the medical authorities for treatment,” Maritime Commander Mohd Najib said.
