PETALING JAYA: A Malaysian engineer has earned himself a place in the Guinness World Records for having more teeth than what was considered biologically possible.
Prathab Muniandy, 33, a father of one, has 42 teeth, significantly more than the typical adult count of only 32.
The very rare condition, known as hyperdontia, causes extra teeth to develop.
The discovery of his condition wasn’t made during a typical clinic check-up.
Instead, Prathab first noticed something unusual in 2021, when he casually mentioned to his wife, Sangitha Daaranii Raman, that it seemed like a new tooth was emerging.
The observation resurfaced later as a topic of conversation during a family gathering, where relatives were surprised that an adult could still be growing teeth.
What began as a casual remark soon turned into curiosity, recalling how his sister-in-law suggested he look into the world record for the most teeth in a person’s mouth.
After checking existing records, Prathab discovered that the previous highest known count was 37 teeth, held by a man from India. Upon counting his own, Prathab found he had already surpassed it.
Further dental examinations confirmed the extent of the condition.
By early 2023, he had a total of 42 erupted teeth, with X-rays revealing two more yet to surface.
Despite this, he said the extra teeth have not significantly affected his daily life.
“I’ve been fortunate that they haven’t caused issues with speech or eating,” Prathab said, adding that regular brushing and flossing are essential parts of his routine.
Prathab shared that dentists had noted the presence of extra teeth during his younger years, but as they caused no discomfort, he chose not to undergo surgical removal.
Prathab submitted his application to Guinness World Records in late 2023, along with dental records and X-ray verification, with the ensuing recognition “a proud and memorable moment” for both him and his family.
While the recognition has yet to translate into major opportunities, Prathab remains optimistic.
“Colgate-Palmolive might notice my story and consider approaching me as a brand ambassador,” he said, welcoming the attention of oral care brands that he has supported since childhood.
With two more teeth yet to emerge, his already record-breaking count may not be final, leaving open the possibility of extending his unique place in history.
In the meantime, his “feat” has made him an Internet sensation, with his social media pages garnering nearly half a million views.
