Woman gets surprise hubby

An 82-YEAR-OLD woman in Hunan, China, did not think much of it when she received 1,000 yuan (RM570) and 20 eggs as ‘betrothal gifts’, but was shocked to find out later that the man had officially registered their marriage, Sin Chew Daily reported.

The incident took place on Feb 9 when a 47-year-old man registered his marriage with the woman named Xie at the Civil Affairs Bureau.

Xie did not understand that the gifts were meant for a marriage proposal.

“He told me to go and handle some paperwork so I did not think much about it,” she said.

As Xie was illiterate, she did not realise that the document issued by the Civil Affairs Bureau was a marriage certificate.

Xie’s family members went to the man’s house to demand an explanation, but an argument broke out between the two sides.

The incident sparked widespread debate online, with many netizens saying they found it difficult to understand a marriage with a 35-year age gap.

Apart from what appeared to be a forced marriage, it was unknown if it was done for fraud.

> A video taken in Guizhou, China, sparked outrage online after a street vendor was seen spraying insecticide on pork and vegetables, China Press reported.

The incident took place in Luodian county when a passer-by filmed a street vendor holding a can of mosquito insecticide and spraying it over produce at his stall in broad daylight.

Many netizens said they were shocked that such practices were still happening.

“Who would dare to buy vegetables from roadside stalls after this?” one wrote.
