E-hailing fare policy to be discussed by commission, says Loke

KUALA LUMPUR: Issues related to e-hailing fares will be discussed by the Malaysian Gig Economy Commission in due course, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

This comes after concerns raised by e-hailing driver groups over the absence of a minimum fare policy.

Loke added that any policy changes could have broader implications and that the commission serves as the appropriate platform to address them.

“Any policy changes will have implications. In any case, the commission has already been established,” he said.

“As such, matters concerning commissions, including fares and related issues, will be discussed at the SEGiM level in due course,” he said at a press conference on Tuesday (March 17).

Earlier this week, Sahabat E-hailing Malaysia urged the authorities to regulate the pricing structure of ride-hailing services, saying current laws allow companies to set fares independently.

The group warned that without a floor price, drivers remain vulnerable to exploitation and face mounting economic pressure.

Last year, the ministry said it had conducted a study to determine whether e-hailing fares should be regulated.

The study was based on the findings and recommendations of the Land Public Transport Strategic Plan for the Klang Valley.
