KUALA LUMPUR: Newly appointed Perikatan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar has chaired his first supreme council meeting at the Gerakan headquarters here Saturday (March 14).

Top leaders from all four component parties - namely PAS, Bersatu, Gerakan and MIPP - arrived in batches before the meeting began at 11am.

Ahmad Samsuri, who is also Terengganu Mentri Besar, said that the meeting will settle a few outstanding issues, including that of the Opposition Leader.

"We will be discussing and settling a few issues today at the supreme council (meeting). We will also look into the matter of the Opposition Leader," said Ahmad Samsuri.

Accompanying Ahmad Samsuri were Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor and PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan.

Another leader said that "the matters of Selangor and Melaka Perikatan chiefs would also be settled today".

Former Perikatan chairman and Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is now the deputy chair of Perikatan arrived with Bersatu vice-president Datuk Dr Mohd Radzi Jidin.

Earlier, Gerakan president Datuk Dr Dominic Lau and MIPP president P. Punithan too arrived to attend the meeting.

There are 15 in the new line-up of the Perikatan supreme council, which was restructured after Muhyiddin stepped down on Jan 1.

The meeting is being watched closely as it is deemed to set the direction of the opposition bloc on who will be the Opposition Leader, which has been a point of contention between Bersatu and PAS.

The matter arose after Opposition Leader and Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin was expelled from his party on Feb 13 over allegations of sabotaging Muhyiddin and the party.

Hamzah had stated that he is still loyal to Perikatan.
