PAS’ Dr Sam named new Perikatan chairman, replacing Muhyiddin

KUALA LUMPUR: PAS vice president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar has officially been appointed Perikatan Nasional chairman, taking over from Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Gerakan president Datuk Dr Dominic Lau told the media that the Perikatan supreme council made this unanimous decision at a special meeting held at the PAS headquarters on Sunday (Feb 22).

“Former chairman Muhyiddin chaired the meeting. We first endorsed his resignation, after which PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang nominated Ahmad Samsuri to be the next chairman,” he said.

“It was a unanimous decision and there was no objection from anyone,” said Lau.

He added that the coalition’s constitution would be amended to enable the formation of a presidents’ council, in addition to the supreme council.

“Our priority is winning the election,” said Lau.

The meeting brought together all the top leaders of Perikatan after months of turmoil, with the exception of Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin, who was recently sacked from the party.

Fifteen top leaders from all component parties attended the meeting, including the presidents of the four component parties: Muhyiddin, Abdul Hadi Awang, Lau and MIPP president P. Punithan.
