Media plays key role in tackling evolving crime landscape, says Bukit Aman CID director


KUALA LUMPUR: The media plays an important role not only in disseminating information to the public but also in assisting authorities to address the increasingly complex crime landscape, says Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Comm Datuk M. Kumar.

He said the role of the media goes beyond reporting as it also helps shape public perception and confidence in enforcement agencies, including the police.

"The crime landscape has become more complex, with criminal activities evolving from physical offences to digital crimes and also involves cross-border networks and more organised operations.

"In this context, the media plays an important role not only to convey information to the public, but also to shape public perception and the level of confidence in enforcement agencies, particularly the CID," he said in his speech during a breaking of fast event with members of the Crime Journalists Association in Bukit Aman on Friday (March 13).

Comm Kumar said that in carrying out their responsibilities, media practitioners must also be mindful how the news is reported.

"We need to report what has truly happened – but the choice of words and the time of publication are also important," he said.

Comm Kumar said both the media and the police share the same mission of ensuring public safety.

"The media uses the pen, while we use the law and existing enforcement mechanisms to ensure safety and harmony are maintained," he said.

He also expressed appreciation for the media's commitment and professionalism in reporting crime-related issues accurately and responsibly.
