Enough food supply for Raya, avoid wastage, says Mat Sabu

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysians have been assured of a stable food supply for the upcoming Hari Raya celebrations, though the government has advised the public to remain prudent and avoid unnecessary wastage.

Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu confirmed that essential items, including rice, meat, chicken, vegetables and milk, are sufficient, with supply lasting at least until June.

He urged the public to celebrate the festivities with peace of mind.

"For now, we can celebrate Raya calmly and with prudence.

“Rice, meat, chicken, vegetables, and milk are all sufficient until at least May and June, so there is no need for the public to panic," he said during a press briefing here after the special cabinet meeting earlier on Friday (March 13).

To bolster food security, Mohamad said the Cabinet has approved an extension of the national rice stockpile.

He confirmed that reserves have been increased to cover a nine-month period, ensuring long-term stability.

Despite the stable outlook, he said the ministry remains vigilant regarding global geopolitical tensions, particularly the ongoing conflict involving Israel, the US and Iran.

He said while Malaysia’s primary food imports from India, Pakistan, Asean, Brazil and Australia do not typically transit through the Strait of Hormuz, officials are monitoring potential spikes in transport and logistics costs.

“The Ministry will intensify Agro Madani and Rahmah sales, offering essential goods at 10% to 30% below market prices.

“Efforts to increase fish and vegetable supplies through 5,000 Komuniti Madani projects will be ramped up to ensure local food availability.

"We do not know when the current international crises will end. Therefore, we are taking these early steps to ensure food remains sufficient,” he added.
