KUALA LUMPUR: The media plays a crucial role in strengthening national resilience and fostering patriotism among Malaysians, says Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
The Defence Minister commended the press for their continued cooperation in reporting on defence and national security matters.
"In the current geopolitical climate — particularly with ongoing conflicts in the Middle East - countries must remain vigilant and strengthen their security capabilities.
“Security and defence are not solely the responsibility of the armed forces. They require the involvement and contributions of all Malaysians," he said in his speech during the Buka Puasa event with media practitioners on Wednesday (March 11).
He said the event is being held as a gesture of gratitude to journalists and also served as a platform to highlight the media’s role in shaping public understanding of national security issues.
"The media has an important responsibility in ensuring that the public understands their role in safeguarding the country.
"The media can also help cultivate patriotism, strengthen national identity, foster solidarity among Malaysians against threats and counter external propaganda that may disrupt racial harmony," he said.
Mohamed Khaled said responsible reporting could help boost the morale of armed forces personnel by recognising their sacrifices and duties in defending the nation.
"A strong relationship between the ministry and the media is essential not only for disseminating information but also for building a society that understands the importance of national defence.
"Cooperation with the media will also help realise Malaysia’s 'whole-of-government and whole-of-society' approach to national defence.
“As Malaysia is not a large or wealthy nation, preparedness and defence require active participation and cooperation from all segments of society,” he added.
Among others who attended the event were Armed Forces Chief Jeneral Datuk Malek Razak Sulaiman and the military top brass.
