PETALING JAYA: Malaysians should not act emotionally and must always be prudent when it comes to sensitive issues, says National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang.
He said differences of opinion should be handled through the proper channels and in accordance with the law.
"Malaysia is built on the foundation of unity, mutual respect and understanding between religions and cultures.
"These values must continue to be upheld by every level of society," he said in a statement on Tuesday (March 10).
"I call on all Malaysians to not act emotionally, not spread speculation, and always be prudent in reacting to sensitive issues, especially on social media," he added.
Aaron was commenting on several incidents that involved violence and racial sentiments recently.
These included the burning of three vehicles belonging to community activist Cikgu Chandra or S. Chandrasegaran; trampling on or damaging sacred symbols of Hinduism in a viral video; and an attack on independent preacher Zamri Vinoth.
Aaron said any form of violence, religious provocation, hatred or extreme actions that touch on racial and religious sensitivities are totally unacceptable in a multiracial and multireligious country like Malaysia.
"The harmony of the country cannot and will never be compromised by the actions of a few irresponsible parties.
"We urge the police to conduct a thorough investigation and take firm action against any parties involved, in accordance with existing legal provisions," he said.
"Action against extremist groups who attempt to threaten national peace must be carried out without compromise
"The National Unity Ministry will continue to work closely with security agencies, community leaders and inter-religious organisations to ensure that the harmony, peace and stability of the country are always maintained," he added.
