Anwar: Embrace AI, but don’t abandon our values

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians must not sacrifice their moral compass or family institutions in the race to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) and digital transformation, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said that while the country must aggressively pursue technological advancements, the people must remain grounded in their cultural and religious values to counter the negative impacts of rapid modernisation.

“We must reach for the sky – new technologies, digital transformation and AI – so we are not left behind.

"But while we reach for the sky, we must always remain grounded," he said during his speech at the International Women’s Day 2026 celebration at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec) on Tuesday (March 10).

Anwar explained that staying grounded means defending religious convictions, moral values, culture and traditions, which are primarily shaped and protected by the family institution.

He noted that while Malaysia embraces development and positive Western influences, the nation must be wary of the moral decay that can accompany unchecked modernisation.

“It is a normal phenomenon we have seen with modernity and Westernisation – there is a general decadence of values, ethics and the role of the family.

“While we choose to be modern and engage with all without prejudice, we must be mindful of our own identity. One of the critical values we must preserve is the family,” he said.

Because of this, Anwar said reinstating these core beliefs is a crucial strategy under the Malaysia Madani framework.

He added that the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry plays a central role in this national mission.

“The core role of the family institution leads us to regard the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry as a parent ministry in ensuring the survival of a nation bound by faith and values,” he said.

This year’s theme, “Empowering Women, Strengthening the Nation”, underscores how valuing women strengthens the entire country.
