Far from home: Coverage for FlySiswa flight subsidy expanded, says PM

PUTRAJAYA: The government will expand the FlySiswa initiative, which provides RM400 in flight subsidies for university students travelling between Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said the programme will now cover students from the National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage, Industrial Training Institutes under the Labour Department, government-linked universities, state-owned higher education institutions, and the Plantation and Commodities Institute.

In addition, trainees under the Manpower Department Training Institution will also be eligible.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the programme aims to ease travel costs for students studying far from home.

“This subsidy is meant to reduce the burden on students who need to travel between Sabah, Sarawak and the peninsula,” he said during the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry’s monthly assembly on Monday (March 9).

Separately, Anwar said the government is also reviewing measures under the Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA) to ensure certain lower-grade civil service positions continue to receive adequate protection.

He noted that some support staff, including office assistants and operational workers, may still require additional safeguards despite salary adjustments under the new system.

“There are around 125,000 employees in these categories, and we must ensure their welfare continues to be protected,” he said.
