Over RM13bil in unclaimed money recorded

TANAH MERAH: The Accountant General’s Department has recorded more than RM13bil in unclaimed money as of Jan 31 this year.

Accountant General Datuk Zainani Jusoh said of the total amount, RM7bil remains in the Unclaimed Money Trust Account.

The remainder has been transferred to the Consolidated Revenue Account, as it was not claimed by owners or heirs within 10 years, she said.

“However, funds that have been transferred to the Consolidated Revenue Account will still be paid if a claim is submitted by the owner or their heirs,” Zainani said after launching the Madani Adopted Village programme at Kampung Bukit Merah here yesterday.

She said the department has never appointed any agents or representatives to claim the money on behalf of claimants, Bernama reported.

“Besides organising activities at government programmes or carnivals, we also provide a mobile bus that travels across the country to assist the public in checking their unclaimed money,” said Zainani.

The Madani Adopted Village programme, she explained, is a continuation of a project that commenced in 2024 in Nanga Tebat, Lubok Antu, Sarawak, and was subsequently followed by the initiative in Kampung Minyak Beku in Batu Pahat, Johor, last year.

In 2026, the Finance Ministry approved Kampung Bukit Merah in Tanah Merah, Kelantan, as the department’s Madani Adopted Village, with plans for an upgrade supported by an allocation of RM500,000.

Among the projects discussed are improvements to infrastructure at two mosques.

Other projects include repairs to village roads, drain widening and installation of solar-powered street lights.
