Special inquiry committee’s report on Azam Baki to be completed in a couple of days, says Fahmi

PUTRAJAYA: The Special Inquiry Committee’s report on the share ownership issue involving Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki will be completed soon, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

According to the government spokesman, the report by the Attorney General would be finalised in “one or two” days.

“As mentioned in the Prime Minister’s Question Time (PMQT) the previous day, today (March 4), he (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) informed that the report by the AG will be completed in one or two days,” said Fahmi during his weekly post-Cabinet meeting press conference on Wednesday (March 4).

During the PMQT in Parliament on March 3, Anwar said the report by the special inquiry committee on Azam would be ready in a few days.

Anwar said further action, including whether there were grounds for the investigation to be extended, would be decided based on the report.

As such, Anwar said the proposal to set up a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into the matter was premature.

The special inquiry committee is being chaired by AG Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar, which also comprises Public Service director-general Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz and Treasury secretary-general Datuk Johan Mahmood Merican.

On Feb 11, Bloomberg published an article titled “Who’s Watching Malaysia’s Anti-Corruption Watchdog?” which detailed allegations that a group of businessmen, allegedly working with certain MACC officers, had pressured corporate figures in takeover cases, which was later described as a “corporate mafia” network.

Azam has strongly denied the allegations and has filed a lawsuit against Bloomberg, seeking RM100mil in damages.

On Feb 24, the MACC also strongly denied allegations of the existence of a “corporate mafia”, saying that the allegations were believed to have originated from an online blog with no identifiable owner, author, or clear accountability.
