MIC has questioned the accuracy of the latest statistics showing the Indian community as just 6.6% of the country’s population, Makkal Osai reported.
MIC economics and statistics chief Mangaleswaran Annamalai said the figures indicate Indians make up between 6.6% and 7.2% of the population.
He said the overall population estimate of 34.3 million includes non-citizens, who account for about 10%, resulting in the lower 6.6% figure when they are included.
This, he added, would affect education, economic participation and employment opportunities, calling it a betrayal of the community.
Mangaleswaran said that the population census was previously conducted door-to-door with clear transparency, but said current methods and the way racial data is compiled are unclear.
> Meanwhile, Kongres India Muslim Malaysia (Kimma) expressed disappointment with Budget 2026, saying it allocated less than 1% to the community, the daily reported.
Party president Datuk Seri Syed Ibrahim Kader said that while other communities receive specific allocations, Indian Muslims do not enjoy the same privilege.
The community has long lobbied for bumiputra status, including during his tenure as senator, but the effort has yet to materialise, he said.
