Perikatan risks image damage if opposition leader is replaced now, says PAS Youth info chief

KUALA LUMPUR: With two days left for the current Parliament meeting, any pressure to change the Opposition Leader is a risky move that will damage the image of the Opposition, says PAS Youth. While the youth wing respects the rights of Bersatu in managing party matters, PAS Youth information chief Nadzir Helmi (pic) said both parties' MPs stand as Perikatan Nasional in the Dewan Rakyat.

"There are two days left with various crucial bills and amendments to be debated. Changing the Opposition leader at this point only can reflect instability and a lack of coordination in the Dewan. What matters now is representing the rakyat in Parliament, not a polemic over positions," he said in a statement on Thursday (Feb 26).

He said leadership matters can be finalised in an orderly manner once the "battle" in the Dewan Rakyat ends.

"PAS Youth has full trust in the party and new Perikatan leadership to review and make a mature decision on this for the stability of the coalition. At such a critical juncture, the rakyat must come first - not positions," he said.

Earlier Thursday (Feb 26), Perikatan chief whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin will, for now, remain the Opposition chief in the Dewan Rakyat. Takiyuddin said that the bloc has yet to submit any notification to replace Hamzah. Hamzah, who is the MP for Larut, was sacked from his party, Bersatu, on Feb 13.

PAS, the component party with the highest number of seats in the Opposition bloc, had earlier said that the new leader would be appointed from among its MPs. This followed the appointment of PAS vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar as the new Perikatan chairman.
