Bukit Kayu Hitam AKPS commander unhurt after gunmen shoot at his car near Thai border

BUKIT KAYU HITAM: The vehicle carrying the commander of the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) in Bukit Kayu Hitam, Senior Asst Comm Mohd Nasaruddin Mohd Nasir, was shot at in a pre-dawn incident on Wednesday (Feb 25) near the border with Thailand.

Kedah police chief Comm Datuk Adzli Abu Shah said the commander escaped unharmed in the attack, which occurred at 5.40am about 1km from the border.

He said SAC Nasaruddin was on his way to perform Subuh prayers at Masjid Al Muhajirin when two men dressed in black and wearing full-face helmets, approached his car on a motorcycle.

"One of the suspects fired two shots, hitting the right rear door and the front passenger door. Fortunately, the commander was not injured," he told a press conference here.

Comm Adzli said that immediately after the shooting, the victim, who was driving alone, pursued the suspects for about 1km before they eluded him in an industrial area.

"He then drove to the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex police station here to lodge a report," he added.

Comm Adzli said police have not ruled out the possibility that criminal syndicates operating along the border may have acted in retaliation after the Bukit Kayu Hitam AKPS scored numerous successful seizures this year, including 100 tonnes of smuggled rice and pork.

Police have also detained many smugglers and undocumented migrants in the area, he said, adding that the victim was responsible for assignments at the ICQS Complex.

The case is being investigated under Section 3 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971 for discharging a firearm with intent to cause death or injury, despite no injuries being reported, he added. – Bernama
