Suspected bank fraud alert ends in surprise Lunar New Year joy

AN ELDERLY man in Taiwan withdrew NT$2mil (RM248,000) from a bank, prompting police to be alerted to a potential fraud, reported China Press.

It was later known that the man wanted to use the money to present red packets to his family members.

The report stated that Taichung police received a call from the bank on Feb 3 that the man was withdrawing the amount at the counter.

The bank expressed concern that the man might have fallen victim to a fraudulent scheme.

Two police officers went to the bank to verify the customer’s personal details and ensure that he was not forced to withdraw the money.

Police reported that the customer appeared amused and mentioned that he had worked in a logistics company before retiring; he typically withdrew the money as ang pow for his wife, son, and daughter-in-law during Chinese New Year.

The officers then sent the man back to his home safely.

> Visuals of Malaysian musician Bingyen were removed from a video that made it into China’s Shandong TV Chinese New Year special programme, Oriental Daily reported.

This was despite him being involved in the filming of the video featuring the song Lai Ma Guo Xin Nian (Visit Malaysia for Chinese New Year) that he wrote and composed.

The 34-year-old was even more perplexed when he found the song credits missing from the programme.

Bingyen revealed that the TV station’s programme director later contacted him to apologise.

“I was invited for the filming of the programme in Melaka. I was looking forward to seeing the programme but found out that my scenes were cut out.

“I was quite in shock and disappointed even though I could still see bits of myself,” he said.

“Since they had invited me and used my song for the programme, I wondered why they edited me out.

“This has nothing to do with the copyright issue; it’s not respecting the creator.”

Bingyen said the director explained that it was not his decision to omit him from the video and that Shangdong TV will communicate with him on the issue.

“If everything goes well, the station will air a version of the video that includes my scenes.”
