KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the Chinese New Year is celebrated together as a symbol of unity and cooperation among Malaysians.

“This celebration we celebrate together shows our unity and togetherness,” he said during his speech at Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH) on Tuesday (Feb 17).

Anwar greeted the crowd with “Ta jia hao” and extended his wishes to the Chinese community by saying “Gong Xi Fa Cai, xin nian kuai le dan nian nian hao”, wishing the celebrant that every year should be good.

“This year carries a meaningful message, noting that the Year of the Horse symbolises resilience, stamina, confidence and agility.

“This spirit must be reflected in our unity and in strengthening our economy so that we can uplift our nation,” he said.

The PM said Malaysia has recorded strong achievements through the cooperation of every race and community.

“We have achieved good progress because of the collaboration of all races and all parties. We share the spirit of consensus.

“No country can succeed on its own. We must focus on our work across all sectors. We need to practise tolerance among all races and religions," he said.

He thanked the Chinese community celebrating the Chinese New Year for working together with the government.

Recalling Malaysia’s early leadership, Anwar said leaders such as Tunku Abdul Rahman and Abdul Razak Hussein had long emphasised the importance of cooperation among all races.

“The challenges in the early years showed that to succeed, we must face all obstacles while remaining united as one Malaysian family,” he said.

In conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration at the KLSCAH, he said the building and the Chinese business community have long been intertwined with the country’s independence and development.

“Don’t worry about the status of this land. We want to preserve this heritage building, so we will work together on this,” he said.

He said the government would give special consideration to support the community’s continued cooperation.

Anwar later signed a red Hui Chun scroll before proceeding to toss the yee sang with guests.
