JOHOR BARU: Gabungan Kelab Media Malaysia (GKMM) has been urged to propose a motion to assist veteran media practitioners who are no longer in service.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the proposal could be discussed ahead of the National Journalists’ Day (Hawana) 2026.
He suggested that media clubs and their umbrella body look into structured arrangements that would allow retired media personnel to remain connected and supported.
“There are organisations like RTM that have veteran associations, which give former employees space to socialise. At least they can gather and stay in touch.
“In that way, they can structure what kind of arrangements can be made for the veterans. It’s a good idea,” he added.
Fahmi was speaking after presenting contributions under the Tabung Kasih@Hawana initiative to retired journalist Low Sock Ken at her home in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah here on Monday (Feb 16).
He added that, unlike civil servants who may retain access to certain facilities after retirement, many media practitioners are left on their own once they leave the industry.
As such, he said media organisations and clubs could consider establishing platforms or associations to ensure retired journalists continue to have social support and engagement.
Fahmi added that the initiative would complement ongoing efforts under Tabung Kasih@Hawana, which was set up to assist media practitioners who are unwell or facing hardship.
“Since its launch in April 2023, a total of 644 media practitioners have been reached and have benefited from the initiative,” he said.
He also said the government would continue to support veteran journalists and ensure their welfare remains a priority within the media ecosystem.
Fahmi also encouraged media organisations to maintain ties with their former employees, especially during festive seasons, as a gesture of appreciation for their contributions to the industry.
