KUCHING: The air pollutant index (API) reading in Serian has dropped to below 200, but schools in the division will remain closed until after this weekend.
The state Education Department said the temporary closure of 107 schools – eight secondary schools and 99 primary schools – was extended until today.

“This decision was made so as not to burden school administrators, teachers, parents and students, especially those in boarding schools,” it said in a statement.
An engagement session was also held with heads of schools in the division, it added.
The department reminded educational institutions to monitor the API readings and comply with recommendations made by the Health Ministry to safeguard the health and safety of students and staff.
Seven areas in Sarawak recorded unhealthy API readings at 5pm yesterday, with Serian recording the highest of 179.

This was followed by Samarahan at 177; Kuching (175); Sri Aman (163); Sarikei (158); Mukah (152) and Sibu (150).
Meanwhile, the Kuching North City Hall’s (DBKU) Musical @ Museum Ground and Kuching car-free morning events, scheduled for this weekend, have been postponed due to the haze.
DBKU urged city folk to limit unnecessary outdoor activities and remain alert to developments on the haze situation.
The Islamic Information Centre also postponed its Harmony Walk, scheduled to take place at the Kuching Waterfront tomorrow.
“We apologise for any inconvenience and disappointment this postponement may cause.
“A new date will be announced once the situation improves,” the centre said.
