RM560mil to boost Sabah’s food security


KOTA KINABALU: A total of RM559.85mil has been allocated to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry this year, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

“The agriculture, fisheries and food industry sector will continue to be the backbone of Sabah’s socio-economic development,” he said at the launch of the Garden to Kitchen Roadshow at Padang Istiadat in Tuaran on Sunday (Feb 15).

The Chief Minister said several initiatives are underway at the Sabah Agriculture Department.

He said RM3mil has been allocated to the Sabah Padi and Rice Board for operating expenses, with an additional RM15mil for the procurement of harvesting and ploughing machinery.

“Sabah is targeting a Self-Sufficiency Level (SSL) of 60% by 2030,” he added.

He stressed that food security is not the responsibility of large-scale farms and projects alone, as it also begins at the grassroots level, starting with home gardens.
