Sea Combat course strengthens police maritime readiness along Sabah’s east coast

LAHAD DATU: Thirteen years after the 2013 armed intrusion, security forces remain focused on safeguarding Sabah’s east coast waters, with operational preparedness further strengthened through intensive Sea Combat training.

A total of 43 officers and personnel from the General Operation Force (GOF) Sabah Brigade completed the 35-day Sea Combat course aimed at enhancing maritime and amphibious operational capabilities in one of the country’s most strategically sensitive regions.

The course, which ran from Jan 11 to Feb 14, was conducted at Battalion 17 PGA and Pulau Adal here, with participants undergoing physically demanding and mentally rigorous training in both controlled and real operational environments.

Training modules included amphibious warfare tactics, combat boat handling, marine navigation, patrol operations and sea combat scenarios, combining classroom instruction with practical field exercises in surrounding waters, including areas off Semporna.

Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said the programme was part of continuous efforts to ensure officers remained ready to confront evolving security challenges.

“I believe all the efforts we have made are to ensure the readiness of our officers in dealing with security-related issues. That is why this training programme is conducted from time to time,” he said when met at the closing ceremony of the course on Saturday (Feb 14).

He added that similar exercises were conducted twice last year and would continue this year to further enhance operational preparedness.

Mohd Khalid stressed that personnel must remain physically and mentally prepared while strictly adhering to standard operating procedures, regulations and national laws in every assignment.

He also expressed appreciation to the trainers and course management team for ensuring the programme was carried out in a structured, effective, and safe manner.

The Sea Combat course forms part of ongoing initiatives to strengthen maritime security capabilities in Sabah, particularly along the strategically important east coast waters.
