Mental health screenings may be next for MPs, says Speaker Johari


KUALA LUMPUR: Mental health screenings may soon be introduced for MPs, says Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul.

This comes after Johari’s earlier directive requiring all MPs to undergo compulsory health screenings.

Datuk Awang Hashim (PN-Pendang) made the proposal during Dewan Rakyat proceedings on Thursday (Feb 12), noting that it could also cover conditions such as bipolar disorder.

“If Tan Sri can make this directive, I am fully in support. I am prepared to undergo the test as well,” he said.

Johari replied, “I will consider this. We can start with Pendang too,” drawing laughter from the floor.

The mandatory health screening requirement was announced on Sept 12, 2023, following concerns about MPs' health.

Johari has championed health screenings since taking over as Dewan Rakyat Speaker.
