ROMPIN: An elderly taxi driver was killed while four other individuals were injured in an accident involving three vehicles at KM143, Jalan Kuantan-Segamat, near the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) Weighbridge here, Thursday night (Feb 5).
In the incident at about 11.20pm, the victim, Abdul Rahman Yusoff, 60, from Kota Bharu, Kelantan, was confirmed dead while receiving treatment at Muadzam Shah Hospital due to severe head injuries, reported Sinar Harian.
Rompin District Police Chief, Superintendent Sharif Sharif Mondoi, said initial investigations found that the accident involved a subcompact sedan driven by a 26-year-old man, a sedan driven by a 56-year-old man and an MPV driven by the victim.
"The driver of the subcompact sedan is believed to be travelling from Segamat towards Kuantan, while the sedan and MPV were travelling from Kuantan towards Segamat.
"Upon arriving at the scene, the driver of the subcompact sedan is believed to have lost control before entering the opposite lane and crashing into the two vehicles involved," he said in a statement on Friday (Feb 6).
According to him, the accident also caused the victim's wife, Rohani Mohd Yussof, 58, to suffer a fractured thigh and right knee, while their granddaughter, Nur Intan Suhaila Abdullah, 14, suffered a fractured right shoulder.
He said another passenger in the MPV, who is also the victim's son, Mohamad Shahrul Abdul Rahman, 20, a student at Universiti Tun Abdul Razak (Unitar), only suffered minor injuries to his hands and face.
"The driver of the subcompact sedan reportedly suffered a fractured right thigh, while the driver of the sedan did not suffer any injuries."
"All the seriously injured victims were taken to the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital, Kuantan, for further treatment," he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
In this regard, he asked anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist with the investigation by contacting the nearest police station.
