US Embassy once asked who PAS would pick as PM, claims Hadi

PETALING JAYA: Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang (pic) has alleged that a US Embassy representative once asked him whom the party would propose as prime minister if it took over the government.

In his winding-up speech at the 72nd PAS muktamar, the PAS president said the matter had taken place when PAS was part of the Pakatan Rakyat coalition.

He said during one of former US President Barack Obama’s visits to Malaysia, several PAS leaders were invited for an event at the US embassy, including Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan and Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar.

Abdul Hadi said a US ambassador had requested to meet him, and he fulfilled the invitation, attending the meeting alongside former PAS secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Ali.

“The ambassador asked, ‘Who does PAS propose as prime minister?’ I asked him back, ‘Who does America agree with?’

“When I told (former prime minister) Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad about the meeting, he said it was a good response,” he said, drawing laughter from the floor.

Abdul Hadi also claimed that PAS had spurned the US' offer to topple the then Barisan Nasional government.
