People being scammed on a daily basis as AI videos, images getting more convincing

KUALA LUMPUR: The public has been urged to stay vigilant against the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI)-generated videos and images depicting royalty, politicians and prominent individuals who purportedly promote investment schemes, says Datuk Seri Michael Chong.

The MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head said people are being scammed daily due to the quality and creativity of such videos.

“They are putting these videos on social media, asking people to invest, so people need to be careful. The latest scam involves Maybank offering high interest and commission schemes, and Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali.

He said the scam promises guaranteed returns with a starting investment of RM1,001, but victims end up losing RM100,000.

“Even though these videos get reported to the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission or other authorities, it doesn’t stop because they keep getting generated,” he told reporters, here at Wisma MCA on Friday (Feb 6).

Chong said there was no way for people to recover their money from these scams, even if they filed complaints with his department.

Additionally, he noted that scammers would hire so-called legal representatives to “help” people retrieve their money, only to be cheated again.

This is because he stated that lawyers are not permitted to advertise.

“We receive many inquiries from people asking us to help them get their money back, but I have to say sorry because it cannot be done.

“What I can do is advise people to be alert and vigilant about these AI-generated videos, especially the old folks, as they are more gullible,” he said.
