Five‑hectare bushfire along Penang Hill jeep track brought under control

GEORGE TOWN: A bushfire covering five hectares of fern and grass area along the Penang Hill jeep track has since been put out.

Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) said they received information about a bushfire at KM1.9 along the Penang Hill Jeep track at around 5.45pm on Wednesday (Feb 4).

"The affected area involved ferns and grass, covering an estimated five hectares.

"Upon notification, we (PHC) immediately contacted the Fire and Rescue Department and response efforts were promptly mobilised.

"Firefighting operations were supported by the Air Itam Bukit Bendera Volunteer Fire Brigade," it said in a statement.

The corporation said police personnel were present to assist with ground coordination and safety.

"Local residents provided support during the incident as well.

"The weather conditions were favourable, with no strong winds reported. This prevented the fire from spreading rapidly.

"At this time, nearby trees remain unaffected," it said.

It added that the fire has since been successfully brought under control.

"Monitoring continues to ensure there is no reignition.

"The public is advised to avoid speculation or sharing unverified information.

"With the ongoing dry season, fires can ignite and spread easily.

"We (PHC) sincerely appreciate the swift response and coordinated efforts of all agencies, volunteers and residents in managing the situation," it said.

Earlier claims on social media that the bushfire occurred in Penang Botanic Gardens were inaccurate.
