MELAKA: Police have stepped up security along the Malaysia-Thailand border following more than 50 bombings and arson attacks reported in three provinces of southern Thailand on Saturday.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail (pic), who disclosed this, advised the public to stay away from conflict zones, citing safety concerns amid the escalating tension.
“We are increasing border controls because we are concerned ... first and foremost about Malaysians who frequently visit the area.
“In my view, given the current tense security situation, Malaysians should reduce travel there and try to avoid visiting the conflict zone at this time. That is the best course of action,” he told reporters after a ceremony held in conjunction with the 77th birthday of Melaka Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Mohd Ali Rustam here yesterday, Bernama reported.
Mohd Khalid – who received the Darjah Gemilang Seri Melaka award, which carries the title Datuk Seri – expressed hope that the conflict would be resolved peacefully to ensure continued security along the nation’s border.
“We pray that everything can be settled amicably and that both countries, especially along the border, remain safe and peaceful,” he said.
Meanwhile, a curfew was imposed in Narathiwat province from 10.15pm on Saturday till 5am the following day after more than 50 violent incidents were reported across three provinces.
Loud explosions heard from Narathiwat sent shockwaves through border communities, rattling homes and raising alarm among residents in Kampung Lubok Gong and Kampung Tersang in Rantau Panjang.
