Suspected Thai rice smugglers arrested


KOTA BARU: Three suspected smugglers have been arrested for transporting 10,000kg of Thai rice.

Region Three Marine Police Force acting commander Deputy Supt Muhamad Keny Anyie Abdullah said the local suspects aged between 16 and 44 were detained at Kampung Kebakat, Wakaf Baru in Tumpat.

At about 9pm on Sunday, a team on routine patrol followed a lorry from Kampung Bendang Pok Yong heading towards Chabang Empat.

“The team stopped the lorry at Kampung Kebakat and detained the three men inside.

“The lorry was carrying 200 sacks of imported white rice weighing 50kg each.

“The total value of the seizure, including the vehicle, is estimated at RM290,000,” DSP Muhamad Keny Anyie said in a statement yesterday, Bernama reported.

The case is being investigated under Section 20 of the Control of Padi and Rice Act 1994 for possession and suspected offences rela­ted to padi and rice control.
