Viral video lands Melaka ‘Pink Bus’ driver in JPJ probe

MELAKA: The Melaka Road Transport Department (JPJ) has opened an investigation into the driver of a stage bus following the circulation of a video showing an alleged traffic offence in Klebang here.

Melaka JPJ director Siti Zarina Mohd Yusop said a notice to attend an investigation has been issued to the concessionaire of the bus service after the video gained traction on social media.

Siti Zarina added that if an offence is established, a notice of compound will be issued under Rule 17B(1) of the Road Traffic Rules 1959 for overtaking at a double line, which carries a maximum compound of up to RM300.

The 14-second clip shows the stage bus overtaking a Perodua Myvi along a double-line, forcing the car’s driver to move to the left to avoid a collision.

In June last year, the Melaka government called on the concessionaire managing the state’s stage bus service in the state to take greater responsibility in enhancing the quality of its drivers’ training.

The concessionaire, whose service is popularly known as the Pink Bus service, was appointed by the Transport Ministry.

Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh made the call following fatal accidents involving stage buses, as well as mounting public complaints over reckless driving that endangered other road users.

Locals have attributed such incidents to poor driving discipline, citing negligence and aggressive manoeuvres by certain drivers as a recurring concern.
