Great experience: Gabriell and Muhammad Izdhihar are happy to be part of a lion dance troupe that was invited to perform during the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple’s lighting ceremony.
MELAKA: Performing a lion dance at the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, the country’s oldest functioning place of worship, was a memorable experience for two 13-year-old students.
Gabriell Josiah and Muhammad Izdhihar Shairman Azairi were among the members of the Siew Heng Association Melaka lion dance troupe that was invited to perform during the temple’s lighting ceremony, held in conjunction with the Lunar New Year, on Tuesday night.
The two SMK Dang Anum students were excited to perform at the historic temple in Jalan Tokong here.
Gabriell said his interest in lion dance began when he was studying in a Tamil school in Merlimau.
“I have always wanted to join a lion dance troupe, and my parents encouraged me after learning that the coach, who is also from Merlimau, was encouraging teenagers to train,” he said.
Muhammad Izdhihar shared a similar experience, saying his parents supported his involvement in the troupe.
“I studied in a Chinese primary school in Merlimau, and I am happy to be given the opportunity to perform,” he said.
Siew Heng Association Melaka Youth Wing chief Wong Sze Ming said 12 traditional lions took part in the performance.
“We are honoured to be invited by the temple to perform for this ceremony,” he said.
The troupe, he added, comprised members from various racial backgrounds, reflecting Malaysia’s multicultural society.
“The coaching classes introduced in Merlimau are to nurture young talent. For our association, anyone can join as long as they are Malaysians.
“This is part of our shared heritage,” he said.
Founded in the 1950s, the association has preserved the lion dance tradition for nearly 80 years.
“Our forefathers established the troupe to encourage youth involvement in cultural activities and it has grown steadily over the decades,” Wong said.
Deputy Speaker of the Melaka Legislative Assembly, Kerk Chee Yee, was among the dignitaries at the ceremony.
Historical records indicate that the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple has existed since the 15th century, but 1673 was recognised as its official founding year following the construction of additional structures using materials imported from China.
