M'sia did not give more than 5,00ha of land to Indonesia, says PM in urging Opposition to raise points responsibly

GOMBAK: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says there is no need for the government to explain further on claims that Malaysia handed over more than 5,000ha of land to Indonesia.

In refuting the Opposition’s claims on the matter, the Prime Minister said this reflected the misuse of freedom of speech.

“This is what’s wrong with the Opposition. They use freedom of speech to spew lies and provide false facts.

“I cannot accept this. This is not how the Opposition should behave,” he said after performing Friday prayers at a mosque here on Friday (Jan 30).

Anwar said the Opposition must be responsible for their statements.

“I will reject such dirty politics,” he said.

On Jan 23, Natural Resources and Environment Sustainability Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup said media reports claiming Malaysia handed over 5,207ha of land to Indonesia as compensation for three villages in the Nunukan area near the Sabah-Kalimantan border are inaccurate.

He said the settlement of the land boundary issue between Malaysia and Indonesia was reached without being based on principles of reciprocity, compensation, or "profit and loss".

More recently, Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin urged the government to be transparent over the issue.
