KOTA KINABALU: Electricity grid integration in Borneo has entered a new phase with the energisation of the Sarawak-Sabah interconnection, linking the two state grids and strengthening supply reliability across the region.
The energisation of the Sarawak-Sabah Interconnection reflects ongoing efforts to develop reliable and secure energy systems for the region, with the development contributing to long-term energy security to power socioeconomic growth.
“By linking our two grids, we are creating stronger operational flexibility and supporting long-term development for both states.
“This interconnection, which started operations on Dec 13 last year, builds on the experience we have gained through earlier regional links and demonstrates how coordinated planning can deliver practical benefits for Borneo,” said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during the ceremony yesterday to mark the occasion.
Abang Johari said reliable electricity is the backbone of development and sustains the community.
He said Sarawak is blessed with predominantly abundant natural resources and is in position to share renewable resources with neighbouring states and countries for common good.
Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the Sabah-Sarawak grid connection will strengthen Sabah’s electricity supply system to become more reliable and sustainable, thus leading to a phased reduction on dependence on fossil fuel-based generation, strengthen Sabah’s electricity reserve margin and further bolster investor confidence in the reliability of the state’s power supply.
“Sabah appreciates Sarawak’s willingness to be a strategic energy partner not only through cooperation in cross-border electricity supply but also as a Borneo development partner that shares the same future aspirations.
“Efforts to enhance electricity development in Sabah require the cooperation of all as one team. The commitment of the state government is clear, which is to ensure the state’s electricity supply is bolstered,” said Hajiji in expressing support for this initiative.
