QuickCheck: Did bikers pop wheelies, ride recklessly at the Sg Bakap R&R?


WHILE most motorcyclists obey traffic laws and ride safely, a minority ride recklessly, endangering not only themselves but other road users as well.

Recently, a video went viral on social media, showing a group of motorcyclists popping wheelies and riding dangerously near a petrol station.

Captions and comments on the video claimed the incident occurred at the Sungai Bakap rest and service (R&R) area, southbound.

Is it true that a group of motorcyclists rode recklessly at the Sg Bakap R&R area?

Seberang Perai OCPD Supt Jay January Siowou confirmed the incident, telling Bernama police had arrested two more men linked to the incident on Sunday (Jan 25).

He added that police had earlier confirmed the arrests of six men aged between 16 and 20 years old over the incident, bringing the total number of individuals arrested so far to eight.  

Supt Siowou said the follow-up arrests were made following intelligence gathering and further investigations by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department.

"The suspects have been remanded for two days until tomorrow. Investigations are ongoing and the case is being probed under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous riding that endangers the safety of other road users," he said in a statement Sunday.

A 13-second video had gone viral on Wednesday (Jan 21) showing several individuals performing wheelie stunts and revving loud exhausts at a petrol station within the R&R area.
