Ex-military chiefs to be charged this week

PETALING JAYA: Former Army chief Jeneral Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan and former Armed Forces chief Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar are expected to be charged this week for various corruption-related offences.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said it had obtained the consent of the Attorney General to charge two ex-military officers and a civilian following investigations.

“The individuals involved include Muhammad Hafizuddeain and his wife, Salwani Anuar.

“They will be charged with four counts under Section 4(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLATFPUAA 2001),” the commission said yesterday.

The MACC said the duo will be charged at the Kuala Lumpur Special Corruption Court today.

Muhammad Hafizuddeain will also face two additional charges at the Shah Alam Special Corruption Court tomorrow, while his wife will be charged under the same act and section at the Jertih Sessions Court in Terengganu on Jan 26.

Meanwhile, the MACC said it will also charge Mohd Nizam, on Friday as well.

It also said that investigations into two other senior Armed Forces officers were in their final stages and that investigation papers will be submitted to the deputy public prosecutor in the near future.

“We are committed to firmly, transparently, and uncompromisingly addressing all cases of corruption and abuse of power, in line with the principles of the rule of law,” it said.
